Signs of cockroach infestation

  • Cockroach droppings which are black, less than 1mm wide and of varying lengths
  • Smear marks on surfaces that can be brown in colour
  • Cockroaches shed skins 5-8 times as they mature to adults
  • Unusual damage – Cockroaches will chew through paper, packaging and plastics
  • Musty odour caused by a large infestation
  • Live cockroaches are particularly active in bathrooms and kitchens

Prevention tips

  • Eliminate food sources – store food in tightly sealed containers, and don’t leave liquids in sinks or buckets
  • Clean up all food waste and spillage, and empty rubbish bins on a daily basis
  • Remove leftover pet food, water and litter trays before nightfall
  • Rinse cans, bottles and plastics before placing in recycling
  • De-clutter by removing old stacks of newspaper and magazines that can provide safe harbourage for cockroaches
  • Seal wood shelves with paint and varnish
  • Seal entry points such as gaps around pipes, drains and common walls
