  • 20mm – as an adult
  • Adults are mostly black to dark brown in colour

Lifecycle

  • After mating the female lays her eggs in damp soil, either singularly or in groups
  • The nymphs look like small adults but lack wings
  • The nymphs grow through several moults, but otherwise they share similar habits to that of the adults

Habits

  • One of the most commonly encountered crickets, especially in suburban yards. They are often found in groups under rocks and logs or any other suitable shelter which may have been laying around on the group for some time
  • Well known for their ‘singing’ on warm summer nights
  • Their hind legs are modified for jumping (this cricket has the ability to fly but it prefers to jump)
  • Feeds on exposed vegetation and plant life
