Genine Lopes has been working as a Safety Practitioner for the past 8 years in the retail, hospitality and service industries. Genine started with Rentokil Initial in 2007 as the National Health & Safety Manager. Since joining the company Genine has completed her qualification and attained a Master of Science in Safety, Health & Environment. Genine is now our Divisional Safety, Health & Environment Manager for the Pacific Region and is based at the Rentokil Initial Office in Sydney.

What is the most enjoyable part of your job?
The most enjoyable part of my job is providing assistance and support to our branches. Working as part of a team is really important to me. Another thing that makes my job most enjoyable is to see the change in culture, behaviours and awareness around Safety at all levels over the time that I have been working here – it really is positive.
How long have you been working for Rentokil?
I have been working with Rentokil for the last two and a half years.
Why did you join Rentokil Initial?
I chose this job for a couple of reasons:
One – to progress in my career. I worked for Woolworths Ltd in a State Role so this being a National Role it was the next step to take and a great challenge.
Two – a change in industry and being exposed to Pest Control, Hygiene and a Plants Service businesses, it was certainly a change from what I would have been used to.

What do you see as the biggest challenge in your industry in the next 5 years?
Harmonisation of Legislation – I would like to think positive and believe that this will happen, but there seems to be a bit of debate around this topic so it may take some time. Harmonisation would certainly make my job a lot easier as I would need to deal with one main set of legislation rather than eight different sets.
