If you see a cockroach, whether it’s in your food prep area or office, chances are there are many more hiding nearby.
There are a few reasons for that…
Cockroaches are nocturnal
They’ll hide in dark places when it’s light and venture out from their hidey holes when it’s dark. Not just responding to natural daylight hours: they can adapt to internal lighting regimens, so inspections during the times when your premise is unpopulated can very enlightening.
Cockroaches are thigmotactic
That means they enjoy living in cracks and crevices. Cockroaches cluster in these areas for security and prefer for three sides of their bodies to be touching something around them. They’ll spend up to 75% of their life in these harbourages.
Cockroaches are gregarious
They will utilise aggregation pheromones to attract other cockroaches to suitable harbourages in order to increase breeding opportunities.
It’s for these reasons that if you see a cockroach out in the open, chances are you have a bigger problem than what you may think. Cockroaches can destroy equipment and food stocks, cause cross contamination and put you at risk of Salmonella, Dysentery & Gastro-enteritis.
